Custom 48' Classic Wishbone Ketch |
Custom 48ft Classic Wishbone Ketch
New Silver Gull, Launched in 1939, designed and built by Harry Newton-Scott, is a classic timber Wishbone Staysail ketch. She was sailed from Sydney to the US then returned 12 years later via West Indies, Panama and the Pacific Islands.
In 1989 the GULL was found by the current owners laid up in the Clarence River, NSW. They have spent significant time and money over the years bringing her up to her former state and now presents in exceptional condition. Based in Brisbane these days, she has been granted Historical Yacht status by the Australian National Maritime Museum.
The owners, currently cruising up the East Coast of Australia have decided it is time to hand her over to new owners. They have fitted her out with very modern convenience, making her a perfect self contained cruising yacht.
The wishbone staysail ketch sail plan includes 6 working sails plus MPS. As she is generally sailed short handed, the owners mostly use 3 sails at any one time. A Yankee headsail and staysail set on furlers for convenience.
A strong Yanmar 100HP engine, a great array of current navigation instruments, watermaker, genset, washing machine and good refrigeration all add to the sailing experience of this classic yacht, without detracting from her heritage design.
Vessel has just had a Side Power bow thruster installed with 100 kg of thrust through a 185mm tube. As part of this upgrade the first 11 rows of ribs have been replaced new.
A new bow plate and 3 new aluminium wishbone booms have also been custom fitted.
She has also had a brand new stem and rudder shaft fitted with all new bearings.
