Sydney builder Marshall Lord made his name with traditionally-styled displacement launches, but at the 2000 Sydney Boat Show he showed off a 1940s style gentleman's speed boat, with a fibreglass hull, sporting teak and highly polished metals in all the right places. What Lord set out to make was a Riva-style runabout with performance better suited to Australian sea conditions than Italian boats. As such he created a fast runner - capable of crossing the Harbour or Pittwater with ease, exuded a feeling of tradition, while providing excitement for the driver and guests.
The hull, designed by naval architect Peter McLean, is a warped-plane design, which means it has a variable deadrise and a flattish run aft for lift, topped with Royal-blue gelcoat and generously lined with oiled Burmese teak. There is just 11° of deadrise at the transom, but the entry is exceedingly fine, allowing it to cut through harbour chop and ferry wake as you make your way to that waterfront eatery or a secluded harbour beach.
Powered by a centre-mounted Steyr turbo diesel engine that's had a recent and comprehensive service, this vessel delivers it's power via a single shaft drive, achieving a speed of over 20 knots. At slow speeds, a side power bow thruster adds manoeuvrability.
On the water the hull lifts the bow to plane, but not too far. The ride is firm, but well damped leaving the skipper with good levels of visibility and control and passengers with a comfortable ride.
There's a small toilet in the bow with fresh water on board for day boating, with a Bimini cover providing shade from the sun.
Guests enjoy a U-shaped seating arrangement in the cockpit making for a delightful picnic and day out with the family boat, ready to be enjoyed by a new owner.
